Blocked Drain Emergency — What to Do Before the Engineer Arrives

A blocked drain rarely announces itself politely. Water backs up in sinks, toilets refuse to flush, or waste appears at a manhole cover — often at the worst possible moment. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can protect your property, keep everyone safe, and help our engineers resolve the problem faster when they arrive.

Stop using water immediately

The single most important step is to stop adding water to the system. Do not flush toilets, run washing machines, or empty baths and sinks if you suspect a main line blockage. Every litre you add has nowhere to go and may surface through the lowest point in your drainage — sometimes inside the property.

If only one fixture is affected, you may use other facilities cautiously. When multiple fixtures are affected, or water rises in a ground-floor toilet when an upstairs tap runs, treat it as a main drain emergency.

Check for obvious external signs

Walk outside and look at any manhole covers, gullies, or inspection chambers on your property. Standing water, sewage, or a strong smell at a cover usually confirms a blockage downstream. Note which covers are affected — this helps our team target the right section of pipe.

Do not lift heavy manhole covers without proper equipment. Covers can be heavy, corroded, or in traffic areas — leave this to a qualified engineer.

Protect people, pets, and belongings

Keep children and pets away from contaminated water. Sewage carries bacteria and poses a genuine health risk. If water is entering a room, move furniture and valuables to a dry area and ventilate where possible.

Wear gloves if you must handle anything that has contacted waste water, and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. Do not use domestic bleach or chemical drain cleaners aggressively — they rarely clear a solid blockage and can damage pipes or create hazardous fumes.

Call a professional drainage company

For a genuine emergency, call Drains First Limited on 07958 784011. We have been providing drainage services across Yorkshire since 1989 and operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from our Leeds base. There is no call-out fee on standard drain unblocking work — you receive a clear quote before we start.

When you call, tell us:

  • What is blocked and how many fixtures are affected
  • Whether waste water is inside or outside the property
  • Your postcode and access details
  • Whether the problem is recurring

That information helps us dispatch the right equipment, including rods, high-pressure jetting, and our combination vacuum tanker where needed.

What our engineer will do on arrival

Our engineer will assess the blockage, identify whether it is local or on the main line, and clear it using the most appropriate method. For stubborn or recurring blockages, we may recommend a CCTV drain survey to inspect the pipe condition and rule out collapse, root intrusion, or displaced joints.

Drains First Limited is CHAS Elite accredited, reflecting our commitment to safe, professional working practices on every job — from domestic emergencies to commercial sites across West Yorkshire and beyond.

After the blockage is cleared

Run taps gradually and flush once to confirm normal flow. If the blockage returns within days or weeks, do not keep paying for repeated clearing without investigation — a survey often reveals an underlying defect that patch lining or targeted repair can fix.

A blocked drain is stressful, but the right response is straightforward: stop using water, stay safe, and call a drainage specialist you can trust. We are here when you need us.
